The following information was provided by timeghost he does a MUCH better job explaining the tube portion of these machines…….
“10EEs were being built during WW2. Material and component shortages caused the design of 10EEs to vary from month to month. In 1941, the massive hydraulic/hydrostatic variable-speed unit manufactured by Sundstand that provided the variable speed drive for 10EEs up to that time was replaced by a three-phase AC motor driving a 3 HP DC generator which provided power for an electronic variable-speed DC motor for the lathe. These are today referred to as, the “Motor-Generator” drive units. There are many of these still around for sale in the used machinery marketplace. The manual, EE – 41007, RI 01075, 127-126165, covers this type of drive system.”

“ In 1949, the three-phase AC motor-DC generator drive system was replaced by a WiaD (Works in a Drawer) system that used electronic-tube controlled thyratrons to rectify AC current to a variable DC voltage to drive the lathe’s DC motor. Many vacuum tubes were used to control the rectifier tubes and other functions. This “works in a drawer” set-up is described by the vacuum tube schematic that you included in my purchase. Through the 1950s, the WiaD drive was redesign and improved.”

(If you need the manual the one above is a good match)
“In 1960, the WiaD drive was replaced by fitting the 10EE with a more powerful 5 HP DC motor and a “module drive” that used an all-solid-state electronic module to control the electronic components, with the exception of the thyratrons. This is the motor control system that is covered in the EE-51891 manual that I purchased from you. This is the motor drive system I wanted an electronic schematic for, which is contained in the manual. There were around 3,000 10EE lathes sold with this drive system.”
